Eyelid Lifts
Who is a candidate?
Men or women who have developed drooping or sagging of the skin of the upper and/or lower eyelids due to genetics or due to aging, gravity, and sun exposure may be good candidates for an eyelid lift. Bulging or puffiness of the eyelids can also be corrected.
An eyelid lift does not correct drooping of the forehead or face. However, these can be corrected at the same time as your eyelid lift with additional procedures.
How is an eyelid lift performed?
Incisions are carefully hidden in the natural crease of the upper lid and just below the eyelashes of the lower lid. Excess skin is removed and the fat pockets of the eyelids are contoured. The skin is then redraped and closed to create a more youthful appearance around the eyes.
The surgery can be performed under a local or general anaesthetic, depending on your preference, and you will be able to return home the same day. The surgery takes approximately 1 ½ hours for two lids and 2 ½ hours for all four lids.
What is the recovery period like?
You will be up and about immediately after surgery. Swelling, bruising and minor discomfort after surgery are normal for a few days. Dr. Hynes will prescribe pain medication for you, as well as antibiotics to minimize the chances of infection. You will be able to shower within a few days. The stitches are removed in the office in the first week after surgery.
Depending on your type of work, you may return within seven to 10 days of surgery. Any residual bruising can be covered with light makeup. Although the skin will be healed within a week, it will be two or three weeks until full activities can be resumed (i.e., sports or heavy lifting).
What are the risks?
All surgery carries certain risks although these are rare and usually minor following an eyelid lift. These include bleeding, infection and temporary skin numbness. Delayed skin healing can occur, but this is most likely in smokers; therefore it is highly recommended that you stop smoking before undergoing an eyelid lift. The scars normally fade with time and in most people are barely visible.
Other possible complications include dry eyes, tearing, minor asymmetries, and eyelid dysfunction. Dr. Hynes will review all the risks of the surgery with you in detail during your cosmetic consultation. Eyelid surgery is not recommended if you have certain eye diseases, uncontrolled high blood pressure or other major medical problems.
